Thanksgiving is in the rearview mirror and now it’s time to get started decorating for all the upcoming December festivities. And this year with supply chain problems a concern, you may need to get a bit more creative when it comes to holiday decorating. Our suggested ideas are simple, easy, and inexpensive.
- Why spend money on a fresh wreath when you can easily create your own original door décor? An appropriately sized rustic wicker basket, some fresh greenery and pinecones and a bow, is all you need to create a traditional door decoration.
- Stop by your local big box craft store and pick up a package of assorted sizes of snowflakes and a couple cans of spray paint. When selecting paint colors, the choice is all yours. Go traditional with white and silver, seasonal with red and green, complement the exterior of your home, or go wild and let the kids decide! Spray the plastic snowflakes, let dry, and then hot glue them in a pattern of your choice. Add a big bow and you now have a great DIY decoration perfect for hanging indoors or out.
- If you’re like most of us no matter how carefully you measure, you still end up with leftover wrapping paper scraps. And again, if you’re like most of us, every year you stuff them in a drawer “just in case.” This year consider using that leftover wrapping paper to add a bit of holiday cheer as a liner for snack bowls before filling with nuts, cookies or hard candies. Planning a serve yourself buffet? Use the leftover scraps to cover the bottom of the baskets or trays holding napkins and silverware.
- Everyone makes a big deal out of decorating the fireplace mantel, hanging the stockings with care, and all that jazz; but what if you don’t have a fireplace or a mantel? Why not consider decorating a built-in bookcase, china hutch or open shelving unit? Include mini holiday trees, candles and snow globes. String twinkling lights over and around the shelves and then hang the stockings from decorative holders or attach them to draped garland.
- Create a very easy and simple holiday table centerpiece using thrift store wineglasses, dollar store votive candles and handpicked holly bush leaves complete with the red berries. To make these upside-down candle holders simply place a holly sprig inside each wine glass and then turn the glass over. Carefully put a votive on the bottom base and you’re done. Simple, easy and elegant.
