Tips for Selecting the Right Realtor

Buying or selling a home can end up becoming a full-time job, especially if you end up with the wrong Realtor. Doing your homework and learning the right questions to ask can easily save you time, money and aggravation.

  • Show me the license. All Realtors are required to be licensed in the state where they are listing or selling property. In South Carolina, this information is easily found online.
  • While online spend a little time at Realtor.com. They offer a complementary Find a Realtor feature which includes the number of years a Realtor has been active, the price range they generally handle, the number of homes sold and their local activity area.
  • Don’t settle. Just because a friend recommended her husband’s cousin or someone in your office suggested her Realtor, doesn’t mean that person is the right fit for you or your situation. Take the time and interview at least three potential agents to ensure you find that one person who you not only feel comfortable with, but will also understand your needs, budget and timeline.
  • Ask questions and then ask some more. Do they work with a team? Do they personally live in the area you are interested in? What is their availability? Many agents, especially those just starting out, find it necessary to work a second job. If this is the case, will those other obligations interfere with their real estate responsibilities?
  • Select a Realtor based on your specific needs. Only selling a home and not planning on immediately purchasing another property? Then you probably need to consider a listing or selling agent. Currently renting or a first-time homebuyer? Then a buyer’s agent may be your best bet. Looking to sell your current home and buy a new one? Spend some time interviewing dual agency Realtors. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with all the pros and cons of dealing with the same agent for both transactions.
